This position offers an opportunity for a skilled ICT professional to join the Eastern Cape Department of Education as an IT Technician, with two posts available at the Zwelitsha location. The role sits within the department's broader mandate to ensure that every technological aspect of the education system, including schools across the province, operates effectively and efficiently. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a wide array of tasks relating to computer systems, hardware, and software, providing essential technical support that underpins the daily functioning of both administrative offices and educational institutions.

A minimum of three years of practical experience working as a technician within an ICT environment is required, along with a valid driver's licence, which is essential for travelling between sites and providing on-site support where needed.

The core duties of this position are extensive and varied. The technician will be responsible for the configuration and technical and network support of critical departmental systems including BAS, PERSAL, EXAMS, EMIS, and SASAMS. Day-to-day responsibilities involve setting up and configuring Microsoft operating systems, applications, and Office 365 email accounts, as well as establishing school networks for both teachers and learners. The role requires hands-on work installing and configuring hardware and software components, troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software issues, repairing or replacing damaged equipment, and upgrading entire systems to ensure compatibility with new software across all computers. Security is a key focus, with the technician tasked to install and upgrade anti-virus software to protect users at the individual level. The position also involves performing tests and evaluations on new software and hardware, acting as the first line of support for error reporting from users, and establishing and maintaining good working relationships with all departments and colleagues. Administrative responsibilities include managing technical documentation, conducting regular system backups, ensuring the smooth running of all IT systems including anti-virus software, print services, and email provision, and compiling technical reports for Districts and Head Office.

This is an OSD-graded position with a competitive salary package. The department is committed to Employment Equity and affirmative action measures, with specific targets for equitable representation across race and gender; females and people with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply and should indicate their status in their applications. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record verification, citizenship checks, financial and asset record verification, and qualification and employment verification. Applications must be submitted through the provincial e-recruitment system, where the Z83 form is automatically generated upon applying; applicants are not required to submit certified copies of qualifications at the application stage, but shortlisted candidates must produce these documents on or before the interview date.
