This vacancy offers two opportunities for an IT Technician within the Information and Communication Technology unit at the Department of Public Works' Head Office in Pretoria. The role operates in a government environment where dependable desktop support, stable network infrastructure and secure information systems are critical to keeping the department functional and productive. The technician will act as a key front-line resource for staff, ensuring that hardware, software and communication tools work reliably while also contributing to broader network planning and maintenance initiatives.

To be considered, candidates must hold a minimum three-year tertiary qualification at NQF Level 06, typically a National Diploma in Information Technology, Information Systems or an equivalent field. In addition, A+ and N+ certifications are required, together with relevant working experience in desktop support within a networked environment. The ideal applicant will be professional, self-driven and able to work independently, with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities. Good computing skills, clear communication, solid interpersonal abilities and report-writing competence are also expected. A sound understanding of MS Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft 365 applications, end-user cloud services and Unified Communications applications is necessary, and a valid driver's licence is mandatory.

The core duties involve providing advanced desktop support and maintenance for Microsoft applications, business application access and unified communications solutions. The technician must detect, troubleshoot and repair faults on LAN and WAN infrastructure, personal computers, peripherals, network points and software. There is also an expectation to assist with the planning, design and implementation of LAN and WAN infrastructure, along with desktop, laptop and printing solutions. The role includes maintaining printing services for transversal government systems such as LOGIS, PERSAL, BAS, WCS and PMIS. Network security is a priority, as the technician must manage and maintain a secure, stable and virus-free environment, while also delivering end-user support for data backup and restoration activities. Monitoring local area networks to ensure optimal performance, liaising with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve incidents, and installing, configuring and supporting software applications round out the responsibilities.

Candidates should note the application conditions carefully. The prescribed Z83 form must be signed, initialled and dated, and must be accompanied by a detailed CV only; certified copies are not required at the application stage but shortlisted candidates will need to submit them, not older than six months, before the interview. Incorrect or outdated Z83 forms will result in disqualification. The Z83 must be completed correctly, with Parts A and B fully filled in and Parts C to G either completed or cross-referenced to the attached CV, and the form must be initialled and signed on the relevant pages. Separate applications are required for multiple posts. Shortlisted applicants will undergo personnel suitability checks and vetting, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Due to the expected volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful.
