This internship opportunity within the National Department of Health’s Trauma, Violence and Emergency Medical Services directorate offers five placements for suitably qualified graduates in the scientific regulatory field. Based in Pretoria, the programme is designed to give successful interns hands-on experience in the administration and enforcement of health regulations, particularly those governing the import and export of biological materials, laboratory safety, and the registration of tissue and stem cell banks. As an intern, you will be embedded in a directorate that plays a critical role in safeguarding public health through oversight of biomedical research and clinical trial activities, making this an ideal entry-level position for those seeking a career in health regulation, microbiology, or biotechnology within the public sector.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate as well as a National Diploma or degree at NQF level 6 in Microbiology or Biotechnology. Beyond the formal qualification, the department is looking for candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills, good interpersonal abilities, and meticulous attention to detail. A scientific analytical mindset is essential, particularly in relation to Chapter 8 Regulations and their applications, and candidates must be computer literate. These competencies are central to the day-to-day responsibilities of the internship, as the work involves interpreting regulatory frameworks and engaging with a range of stakeholders.

The core duties of the internship are varied and substantive. Interns will coordinate the import and export permit programme in line with Regulations No. R. 181, ensuring that applications and permits are processed correctly and in compliance with legal requirements. They will also participate in auditing microbiology laboratories that seek registration with the Department of Health, monitoring these facilities for biosafety and biosecurity compliance as set out in Regulations No. R. 178. In addition, the role involves registering and conducting audits of tissue banks and stem cell banks under Regulations No. R. 182 and No. R. 183 respectively. Interns will also be expected to respond to queries from the clinical trial industry, health researchers, postgraduate students in health sciences, and representatives of tissue and stem cell banks, providing accurate guidance and information.

There are several important conditions attached to this post. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, with the results scored as an additional criterion during the interview process. For SMS-level posts, further technical exercises and psychometric assessments may apply, though this internship is primarily aimed at junior graduates. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV only; certified copies of qualifications will be requested only for those reaching the final selection phase. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department will conduct personnel suitability checks and vetting procedures, and it reserves the right not to fill the posts. Candidates who do not receive an interview invitation within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
