The Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent, commonly known as MISA, is offering two internal audit internship positions at its Head Office in Centurion, Pretoria, as part of the 2026 to 2028 graduate internship programme. This is a structured workplace learning opportunity aimed at unemployed South African graduates who wish to build a career in internal auditing within the public sector. The successful interns will be placed within the Internal Audit directorate, where they will support the unit in delivering its mandate of providing independent assurance, risk management oversight, and compliance monitoring across MISA’s operations. The programme is designed to give interns hands-on exposure to the full audit lifecycle, from planning through to reporting, while working alongside experienced audit professionals in a government entity context.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma at NQF level 6 or a Degree at NQF level 7 in Internal Auditing, BCom, or Accounting Sciences. This is a graduate internship, so candidates must be unemployed at the time of application. Importantly, participation in a public service internship is a once-off opportunity per qualification, and individuals who have previously completed any internship programme will not be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide proof of permanent residence, and all appointments are subject to personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship verification, financial records, and qualification verification.
The core duties of the internal audit intern will involve assisting with the execution of internal audit assignments, which includes conducting audit tests, gathering and analysing evidence, documenting business processes, identifying control weaknesses, and preparing working papers. Interns will also support the compilation of audit reports and may be involved in follow-up audits to monitor the implementation of recommendations. The role provides practical experience in evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, compliance with laws and regulations, and the reliability of financial and operational information. Interns will be expected to work under supervision but with increasing independence as they develop their skills, and they will be required to maintain confidentiality and uphold the ethical standards of the internal audit profession.
Successful candidates will be expected to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement within three months of appointment, and to complete a financial interest declaration within one month of appointment and annually thereafter. Applications must be submitted using the new Z83 form, accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, and must quote the relevant reference number. Certified copies of qualifications and other documents are not required at the application stage but will be requested from shortlisted candidates. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and applicants who have not been contacted within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful. This internship offers a valuable entry point into the public sector audit profession, with a monthly stipend provided for the duration of the programme.
