This position is for an Inspector specialising in Traffic Law Administration within the Western Cape Mobility Department, operating under the provincial government. The role is situated in a metro context and focuses on ensuring compliance with road traffic legislation and the proper administration of traffic law systems. As an inspector, you would be part of a team responsible for upholding the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern road traffic in the Western Cape, working within the broader mandate of the department to promote safety, efficiency, and accountability in the province’s transport environment.

Candidates must bring a strong working knowledge of the key legislation that underpins this function, including the National Road Traffic Act, the Western Cape Provincial Road Traffic Administration Act, and the associated National and Provincial Road Traffic Regulations. Familiarity with the Public Finance Management Act, National Treasury Regulations, and Provincial Treasury Instructions is also required, as the role involves implementing financial processes in line with these prescripts. A central part of the role is managing the National Traffic Information System, commonly known as eNaTIS, including its policies, processes, and procedures. The ideal candidate will be skilled in using information systems, performing numeracy and literacy functions, and applying computer systems effectively. Strong communication skills, project management abilities, and the capacity to conduct economic, financial, and statistical analysis are essential. The role also demands sound legal administration skills, report compilation, problem-solving, and the ability to plan and organise activities while working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. Flexibility is important, as irregular hours may be required.

The core duties of the position revolve around conducting audits and investigations. This includes planning audits, carrying out follow-up audit inspections on reports issued by the National Inspectorate, and liaising with departmental stakeholders regarding audit and investigation responses. The work is technical and compliance-focused, requiring meticulous attention to detail and the ability to engage with various parties across the department and beyond. You will be expected to apply best practices and regulatory frameworks to ensure that traffic law administration is carried out correctly and consistently.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to test technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. Candidates will also need to submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe before the interview, and failure to do so may result in exclusion from the process. By applying, you consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and all applications must be submitted online before the closing date. This is an OSD-graded role offering a competitive salary within the advertised band, and the position provides an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to road traffic governance in the Western Cape.
