This position is for an Inspector based at the Labour Centre in Sabie, within the Department of Employment and Labour. The role is a re-advertisement, meaning that anyone who applied previously must submit a fresh application to be considered. As an Inspector, the successful candidate will play a key part in upholding and enforcing South Africa’s labour legislation, ensuring that employers and workers alike comply with the legal framework that governs fair labour practices. The work is based in the Sabie area and involves regular interaction with workplaces, employees, and employer representatives, making it a dynamic and community-facing role within the broader labour inspectorate system.
Candidates must hold a three-year relevant qualification in Labour Relations, BCom Law, or LLB. No prior work experience is required, which makes this an excellent entry-level opportunity for recent graduates who have the necessary academic background. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as the role will require travel to various workplaces and sites. The ideal candidate should have a solid working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, as well as key legislation including the Skills Development Act, the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Unemployment Insurance Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act. In addition, the role demands a range of practical skills: facilitation, planning and organising one’s own work, computer proficiency in spreadsheets, PowerPoint and word processing, strong interpersonal abilities, problem-solving, interviewing, analytical thinking, and effective verbal and written communication. Familiarity with the Employment Equity Act is also required.
The core duties of the Inspector involve conducting occupational inspections to ensure compliance with all labour legislation. This includes investigating reported cases where contraventions of labour laws are alleged, and taking enforcement action where necessary. The Inspector will also carry out proactive “blitz” inspections on a regular basis to monitor ongoing compliance, and will conduct advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about identified and allocated labour legislation. Another important responsibility is assisting with the drafting of inspection plans, preparing reports, and compiling statistics on allocated cases. These administrative and analytical tasks are essential for tracking compliance trends and supporting the broader work of the labour centre.
This post is subject to the department’s employment equity targets, with priority given to African Males, Coloured Males, Indian Males, Indian Females, White Males, and People with Disability. The position is based at the Labour Centre in Sabie, and the enquiries contact is Ms L Mashego. Applicants should take careful note of the closing date and the application submission method specified in the circular, as late or incomplete applications may not be considered. This is a meaningful opportunity for a qualified graduate to begin a career in labour law enforcement and make a tangible difference in ensuring fair and lawful working conditions across the region.
