This position is for an Inspector Panel Beating and Mechanical within the Fleet Maintenance directorate, based in Bedfordview. The role sits within a government department, meaning the work is governed by public service regulations, treasury frameworks, and supply chain management principles. The core purpose of the job is to serve as a quality control and compliance link between the department’s vehicle fleet and the external panel beaters and mechanics who carry out repairs. The inspector is responsible for protecting the department from overcharging, fraud, and substandard work, while also ensuring that all repaired vehicles are roadworthy and fit for continued use.

To be considered, applicants need an NQF Level 4 motor industry certificate and a trade test as a motor mechanic, panel beater, or motor body repairer. A valid driver’s licence and a clean criminal record are essential. The department also expects knowledge of planning and organising, an understanding of the Treasury and SCM framework, relevant legislation, Public Service Regulations, and communication practices, as well as a sound grasp of the public service management framework. In terms of experience, at least one to two years of hands-on work in panel beating, mechanical repair, and inspection is required.

The main duties are varied and require both technical skill and administrative discipline. The inspector must assess and inspect accident-damaged vehicles, looking at panel, chassis, and mechanical damage to determine the scope of repair work. This includes conducting pre-repair and post-repair inspections to make certain all work complies with OEM specifications and SABS standards. A key part of the work is verifying repair estimates against actual damage to prevent over-quoting and fraud by service providers. Quality control is another major responsibility: the inspector checks panel alignment, filler thickness, paint match, overspray, and panel gaps, as well as mechanical systems such as engines, brakes, suspension, steering, exhausts, and electricals after repairs. Before signing off on any vehicle, the inspector must ensure it meets roadworthiness and licensing requirements under the National Road Traffic Act. Financial and documentation control are also central to the role. The inspector compiles inspection reports with photographs and checklists, approves or rejects invoices based on the work actually completed compared to the quote, and maintains a vehicle repair register that tracks turnaround times, repeat faults, and warranty claims. The role also involves liaising with panel beaters, mechanics, and other service providers to rectify defective workmanship, investigating repeated failures or customer complaints, and advising on whether vehicles should be condemned, auctioned, or kept in service.

This is a government post with several important conditions. Applications must be submitted online using the relevant platform, and applicants must complete the Z83 form and attach a detailed CV with at least three contactable references. Shortlisted candidates will need to bring certified copies of their qualifications, identity document, and driver’s licence to the interview. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and preference may be given to appointable applicants from designated underrepresented groups, with persons with disabilities encouraged to apply. All shortlisted candidates will undergo screening, security vetting, and verification of criminal records, citizenship, credit worthiness, previous employment, and qualifications. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and candidates who do not hear back within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. Applicants also consent, by submitting their application, to their personal information being processed for recruitment purposes in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
