This position offers an opportunity to serve as an Inspector of Maintenance Operations within the Inspectorate component of the Limpopo Department of Education, with two posts available at the Capricorn and Waterberg centres. The role is central to ensuring that roads maintenance work carried out in the province meets the required standards and specifications. Operating as a technical authority, the inspector will be responsible for monitoring compliance, providing expert guidance to maintenance teams, and supporting the delivery of quality road infrastructure. The work involves regular site inspections, reporting, and collaboration with internal teams, communities, and the Roads Agency Limpopo, making it a hands-on role that requires both technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills.
To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a Trade Diploma as well as Grade 12, and they must have at least three years of experience in road works maintenance. A valid driver’s licence is required, although this condition is waived for applicants with disabilities. The role demands a solid understanding of relevant Public Service Acts, regulations and frameworks, as well as knowledge of artisan-related activities and the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act. In addition to technical expertise, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate a range of behavioural and management competencies, including problem solving and analysis, decision making, team leadership, creativity, financial management, customer focus, communication, computer skills, people management, planning and organising, and conflict management. These skills are essential for effectively guiding maintenance teams, resolving issues on site, and liaising with various stakeholders.
The core duties of the inspector revolve around inspecting roads maintenance works to monitor compliance with standards and specifications. This includes checking and monitoring work quality, writing detailed reports, identifying gaps, and providing advice to workers and maintenance teams. The inspector is also expected to recommend appropriate actions where non-compliance or deficiencies are found. Beyond inspection, the role involves providing roads maintenance expertise to teams by offering work guidance, identifying training needs, conducting skills audits, facilitating training, and carrying out in-house training sessions. Another significant responsibility is monitoring progress on capital projects, which includes conducting inspections of capital works, attending project meetings, and providing progress reports. The inspector also serves as a liaison between the department, communities, and the Roads Agency Limpopo, attending joint meetings on the status of road quality, responding to road maintenance queries, and producing written reports on these engagements.
Applicants should note that this is a level eight position within the public service, and the appointment process will be guided by the department’s Employment Equity Plan. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability and an integrity assessment. Successful candidates will also be subjected to personnel suitability checks, which cover criminal records, citizenship, financial and asset records, and verification of qualifications and employment history, as well as security clearance processes. Applications must be submitted on the prescribed Z83 form, and only the Z83 and a curriculum vitae are required at the initial stage; shortlisted candidates will need to provide supporting documents. It is important to note that faxed or photocopied application documents will not be accepted, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. The department reserves the right not to fill the posts, and applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful.
