This is a re-advertised vacancy for an Information Technology Technician within a national government department, based in Pretoria. The post is a permanent, entry-to-mid-level technical role that forms part of the department’s corporate services or IT unit, responsible for ensuring the stability, security and accessibility of the organisation’s digital infrastructure. Because this is a re-advertisement, candidates who submitted applications previously are encouraged to re-apply, as their earlier applications will not automatically be carried over.

The successful candidate will need a Matric certificate as well as a National Diploma or relevant NQF 6 qualification in Information Technology. While not mandatory, additional certifications such as ITIL Foundations, MCSE, A+ or N+ will strengthen an application. A valid driver’s licence is required, though this condition is waived for applicants with disabilities. At least two years of practical experience in an IT environment is essential. The department is looking for someone with working knowledge of IT policy and regulatory frameworks, including security protocols, experience supporting Android and iPad mobile devices, LAN/WAN support, and in-depth familiarity with providing hardware and software support on Windows systems. The ideal candidate should also demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, problem-solving and analytical ability, advanced computer literacy, and sound technical support capabilities. Personal attributes such as ethical conduct, honesty, integrity, conscientiousness, proactiveness, the ability to work under pressure and independently, and the capacity to maintain confidentiality are important.

The duties are broad and hands-on. The technician will provide network connectivity to all computer users, ensuring that both WAN and LAN dependent functions are accessible, and reporting on connectivity changes and performance status. They will maintain server room infrastructure, including fault reporting, cleanliness, access management and maintaining the access register. They will also safeguard the security and privacy of networks and computer systems by installing and upgrading antivirus software, ensuring correct operating system versions and patches, monitoring updates, and overseeing the connectivity of the GUP server. A significant part of the role involves installing, configuring and troubleshooting computer systems, repairing or replacing damaged hardware, upgrading systems for software compatibility, and testing new hardware and software. The technician will also provide IT service desk support, handling incoming calls, emails and walk-in queries, logging incidents, issuing reference numbers, supporting users, escalating unresolved issues, and tracking queries to ensure a rapid turnaround. Additionally, they must implement and maintain IT security controls to protect data integrity, including performing daily, weekly and monthly backups of departmental systems, servers, databases and Microsoft 365 services, verifying backup completion reports, resolving failures, conducting quarterly restore tests and disaster recovery exercises, and monitoring Veeam backup operations.

This post has a strong equity focus. Preference will be given to African male or female candidates, Coloured male or female candidates, youth, and persons with disabilities, as these groups are currently underrepresented in this position. The role offers a salary at level 07 with benefits, and the closing date is provided in the full advertisement.
