The Department of Water and Sanitation is seeking a qualified Information Technology Technician to join its Mpumalanga Provincial Operations, based in Mbombela, within the Water and Sanitation Services Management branch. This role is central to maintaining the stability, security, and efficiency of the department’s IT environment, ensuring that end-users across the province can rely on functional hardware, software, and network connectivity to support the delivery of essential water and sanitation services. The position is graded at a level that reflects its technical responsibility, and the successful candidate will be expected to operate both independently and as part of a broader IT support team, with a strong focus on service delivery, problem-solving, and adherence to departmental policies and standards.
Applicants must hold a relevant NQF level 6 qualification in Information Technology, coupled with at least three years of appropriate IT experience. A valid unexpired driver’s licence is required, as the role involves travelling to various remote sites and offices. Essential certifications include Microsoft Certified Engineer, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), as well as A+ and Network+ certification. Additional knowledge that will serve as an advantage includes familiarity with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, MS Office 2010, 2013 and Office 365, Symantec Antivirus, Microsoft MS, transversal systems such as PERSAL, SAP and LOGIS, and ITIL. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of client-server IT environments, strong leadership qualities, excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work under pressure. Good verbal and written communication skills, solid computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and exposure to different business application platforms are also important.
The core duties of the position are broad and hands-on. The technician will manage calls logged on the call management system, provide end-user support for hardware, software and network connectivity issues, and enforce all IT policies, norms and standards. Responsibilities also include performing quality control for the Local Area Network (LAN), installing, maintaining and upgrading computer hardware and software as part of second-level fault identification, and installing or upgrading software applications that are not handled by outsourced partners. The technician will maintain internet and e-mail client services, ensure antivirus software signatures and operating system patches are up to date, and initiate and coordinate change control procedures. Additional duties include providing technical input for end-user training and development, performing routine backups for all available servers, and compiling monthly performance reports. The appointee must be willing to perform overtime and standby duties when necessary.
This is an equal opportunity employment opportunity, with the Department of Water and Sanitation committed to the objectives of the Constitution and the Employment Equity Act. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and preference will be given to employment equity targets. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to suitability checks, including SAQA verification, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate when shortlisted, and foreign nationals or dual citizenship holders must provide a police clearance certificate from their country of origin. Candidates will also be required to complete a financial disclosure form and undergo security clearance. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and applicants who do not receive feedback within three months should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the position.
