This position offers an opportunity for a qualified engineering professional to contribute directly to patient care within the public health sector. Based at Khayelitsha District Hospital and falling under the Metro Health Services directorate, the role of Industrial Technician Production (Clinical Engineering) is centred on ensuring that vital medical equipment remains safe, functional, and available for clinical use. The incumbent will operate within a hospital environment where the reliability of electronic, respiratory, and anaesthetic devices is critical, and will be expected to take ownership of the full maintenance lifecycle for this technology.

To be considered, candidates must hold an appropriate National Diploma in Electrical Engineering with a light current focus, whether from the T, N, or S stream, or alternatively be registered as an Engineering Technician in terms of the Engineering Professions of South Africa Act (Act 46 of 2000). Practical experience is essential, specifically in the repair and maintenance of clinical equipment or proven work in medical equipment maintenance. The role also carries inherent requirements, including possession of a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence, and a willingness to perform standby duties and work after hours when needed. Beyond formal qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong competencies in managing and supervising the repair of health technology equipment, reading circuit diagrams, and fault-finding on electronic medical devices. The ability to compile technical specifications, plan and organise maintenance schedules, and apply accurate technical insight to solve problems is also crucial.

The duties are broad and hands-on. The technician will manage and carry out clinical maintenance, repairs, routine inspections, and evaluations of electronic, respiratory, and anaesthetic equipment. Administrative responsibilities form a key part of the role, including writing reports, drafting specifications, and keeping detailed records of departmental activities. The position also demands a high standard of service delivery, with the expectation that the technician will engage effectively with clients, self-manage to perform optimally, and train various staff and hospital personnel. Communication is vital, as the candidate must attend meetings and interact clearly with both hospital staff and private sector employees. Furthermore, the role requires strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adherence to all legal requirements, protocols, and procedures governing medical equipment and workplace safety.

This is an OSD-graded post within the provincial health system, and the successful candidate will join a dedicated team supporting clinical engineering services. As with all public service vacancies, no payment of any kind is required when applying. This is a demanding but rewarding position for someone who values precision, public service, and the critical role that well-maintained medical technology plays in saving lives.
