The Industrial Technician in General Engineering Production (Electronics) position at Groote Schuur Hospital forms an integral part of the Clinical Engineering department, which is responsible for keeping the hospital’s medical technology safe, accurate and operational. Based in Observatory, this technical role is centred on supporting patient care by ensuring that electronic hospital equipment functions reliably. The technician works within a multidisciplinary health environment, liaising with clinical and support staff as well as external service providers, and contributes to the broader goals of quality healthcare delivery through proactive maintenance, timely repairs and rigorous safety testing. The role is suited to a hands-on professional who thrives on solving technical problems and who understands the critical importance of medical device performance in a hospital setting.

Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Electrical, Electronics or Clinical Engineering, whether in the T, N or S stream, or be registered as an Engineering Technician under the Engineering Professions of South Africa Act (Act 46 of 2000). In addition, the post requires appropriate practical experience in the repair and maintenance of medical and related hospital equipment. A successful candidate will need to demonstrate the inherent ability to work effectively with hand tools and electronic test equipment. Essential competencies include a sound working knowledge of medical equipment, the capacity to fault-find and repair electronic hospital equipment down to component level, and a clear understanding of health and safety requirements in a technical environment. Good verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy, precision in resolving technical problems, and familiarity with a range of hand, power and dedicated test instruments are also required.

The core duties involve carrying out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on electronic hospital equipment, performing acceptance and safety testing when new or repaired devices are introduced, and calibrating medical equipment to ensure accuracy and compliance. Beyond hands-on technical work, the technician is expected to undertake general administrative functions as required by the Clinical Engineering department, including writing reports, preparing specifications and keeping detailed records of departmental activities. Interaction with hospital staff and employees from the private sector forms a regular part of the job, both for coordinating services and for troubleshooting repairs. The technician will also handle everyday departmental queries, making communication and customer-oriented problem solving important aspects of the role.

This is a permanent post within a provincial government department and is graded according to the applicable technical salary scale, with a competitive annual remuneration package. Interested candidates should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying, and all applications are to be submitted through the official online application portal used by the Western Cape Department of Health. The vacancy is advertised under the relevant Public Service circular for the year, and further enquiries may be directed to the departmental contact named in the advertisement. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to apply technical expertise directly in support of public healthcare delivery at one of South Africa’s foremost hospitals.
