The Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) position is a fixed-term, 36-month contract appointment within the Department of Correctional Services, operating under the Regional Coordination and Oversight directorate. This is a part-time role, structured at Level 5 and measured as a 3/8th appointment, designed to provide an independent, community-based layer of oversight within correctional facilities. The role is available at numerous correctional centres across all management regions, including Central, Gauteng, Limpopo/Mpumalanga/North West, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. As an ICCV, you will act as a vital bridge between inmates, Department of Correctional Services officials, and the broader community, ensuring that complaints are heard, recorded, and resolved in line with Batho Pele principles and the constitutional mandate for humane treatment of offenders.
To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate and be computer literate with a high degree of accuracy. A formal recommendation or nomination from a community organisation is required, and this document must not be older than six months at the time of application. The role demands someone who is public-spirited, assertive, and capable of working under pressure, both independently and as part of a team. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact sensitively with inmates and officials. A valid driver’s licence is an added advantage. Importantly, preference will be given to qualifying applicants who reside in communities near the correctional centre where the vacancy exists, reflecting the programme’s emphasis on local accountability and community involvement.
The core duties of the Independent Correctional Centre Visitor are wide-ranging and hands-on. You will be responsible for conducting regular site visits to correctional centres and reporting on urgent matters as they arise. This includes carrying out interviews and consultations with inmates and DCS officials regarding complaints and other mandatory issues. You will receive and capture all complaints and requests onto the official database, open and maintain individual case files, and make follow-ups on outstanding complaints to ensure they are not neglected. Monthly reports must be submitted, and you will also provide statistical analysis of all complaints received, helping to identify patterns and systemic issues. In addition, you will attend to enquiries from inmates, families, or officials, and carry out all reasonable instructions from your supervisor or the Regional Manager. This is a role that requires integrity, discretion, and a genuine commitment to fairness and transparency within the correctional system.
