This position is for an HR Practitioner specialising in Service Benefits, based at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. The role sits within the Directorate for HR Administration and Utilisation, placing it at the heart of employee support and the administration of the full range of non-salary benefits that public servants rely on. As an HR Practitioner, you will be responsible for ensuring that employees receive accurate, timely and policy-compliant assistance across several key benefit areas, including housing and accommodation allowances, financial assistance and debt management, travel and transport benefits, and leave administration. The role also extends to the broader management of resources and the monitoring of performance information, meaning you will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of the HR administration function while maintaining high standards of service delivery and confidentiality.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a recognised three-year degree or National Diploma in Human Resource Management or a related qualification. Practical experience of one to two years within an HR environment is required, along with a working knowledge of PERSAL, the personnel and salary system used in the public service. Computer literacy is essential, as is a valid driver’s licence, and candidates must be willing to travel as part of their duties. Beyond these formal requirements, the department is looking for someone with a solid understanding of public service policies, legislative frameworks and HR policy processes, as well as an in-depth grasp of the regulatory framework governing the Public Service. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong competencies in planning, organising, leading and control, change management, team leadership, project management, presentation, conflict management, report writing, training and facilitation, coaching and mentoring, and time management. Personal attributes such as integrity, honesty, assertiveness, client orientation, networking ability, influence and impact, applied strategic thinking, and the capacity to maintain confidentiality are also central to success in this role.

In day-to-day practice, the duties are varied and people-focused. You will administer housing and accommodation benefits, manage employee financial assistance and debt management services, and oversee travel, transport and related benefits. You will also implement and administer leave and other employee benefits, ensuring that all processes align with current policy and legislative requirements. Resource management and performance information management form part of the role, so you will need to be comfortable with planning, monitoring and reporting. This is an appointment made under the Public Service Act, and the post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) framework, reflecting its professional HR nature. The role offers an opportunity to work within a structured, service-oriented environment where accuracy, discretion and a commitment to employee wellbeing are essential. If you meet the qualifications and have the required HR experience, this position provides a meaningful career step within the public service, contributing directly to the welfare and support of staff across the department.
