This position offers an opportunity to join the Western Cape Department of Health as a Housekeeping Supervisor at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, with five posts available. The role is central to maintaining a safe, clean, and well-organised environment within a busy hospital setting, directly supporting patient care and the overall functioning of the institution. As a supervisor, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating the work of Household Aids, ensuring that all cleaning, hygiene, and support services meet the high standards expected in a healthcare environment. This is a hands-on supervisory role that requires both operational oversight and the ability to step in and assist with frontline duties when staff shortages arise.

To be considered for this post, applicants must have a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) or Grade 9 (Std 7) as the minimum educational qualification. In addition, you need appropriate housekeeping experience within a hospital environment, as well as relevant supervisory experience. The role demands physical capability, including the ability to lift heavy equipment, and a willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and night shifts when required. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to perform routine structured tasks and adhere strictly to safety standards, including Infection Prevention Control measures. Knowledge of hospital hygiene audits, waste management, linen management, catering, and time management is also required, as is the ability to supervise subordinates effectively and make optimal use of available staff.

The key duties of the position are wide-ranging. You will supervise, coordinate, control, and inspect the work of Household Aids, and assist them directly when staffing levels are low. You will manage housekeeping duty registers and schedules, ensure the correct segregation and removal of different types of waste in the wards, and maintain a consistently high standard of hygiene and tidiness throughout the unit and institution. Stock control is another important responsibility, including ordering and managing kitchen and cleaning equipment. You will also ensure proper linen sorting and management in the wards, and provide support to both the nursing department and non-nursing personnel at ward level, as well as to the broader Support Services unit. Throughout your duties, you must adhere to the Code of Conduct and demonstrate the core values of the Western Cape Government Department of Health, while also pursuing your own self-development.

This is a permanent, OSD-graded post with a competitive entry-level salary. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a practical assessment as part of the selection process. Importantly, no payment of any kind is required when applying for this position, and applicants should be wary of any requests for money. This role is ideal for an experienced housekeeping professional with supervisory skills who is committed to maintaining excellent hygiene standards in a hospital environment and supporting the wider healthcare team.
