    This permanent position of Housekeeping Supervisor, with two posts available, is based at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. The role is central to maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment within the hospital, directly supporting patient care and infection prevention. As a supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall control, organisation, and coordination of all housekeeping-related services, including linen management, waste management, hygiene services, terminal cleaning, contract management, and stock control. The role requires someone who can lead and supervise cleaning staff, ensure that cleaning protocols are followed, and step in to provide relief according to service needs.

    To be considered, applicants must have a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) or Grade 9 (Std 7) as the minimum educational qualification. In addition, relevant experience in cleaning and housekeeping within a hospital environment is essential, specifically including terminal cleaning, stock control, linen management, and waste management. The nature of the job demands shift work, so flexibility is a key inherent requirement. The ideal candidate will possess sound knowledge of cleaning equipment operation, effective use of consumables, and a thorough understanding of cleaning and housekeeping policies, protocols, and procedures, as well as Infection Prevention Control measures. Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with good interpersonal, organising, and decision-making abilities, are also required to manage the day-to-day operations effectively.

    The main duties of the post are wide-ranging. The supervisor will be responsible for the overall control and coordination of tasks related to linen, waste, hygiene, terminal cleaning, contract management, and stock control. This includes keeping accurate records and compiling reports, as well as submitting requisitions for the repair of broken equipment to ensure a safe working environment. The role also involves coordinating and providing effective training to cleaning staff, ensuring that service delivery is aligned with the hospital's standards. Furthermore, the supervisor must effectively manage the utilisation and supervision of resources, including related human resources matters. This means overseeing staff performance, allocating duties, and ensuring that all housekeeping activities are carried out efficiently and in compliance with health and safety regulations.
