This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to patient care and the smooth running of a public health facility as a Household Aid within the West Coast Health District, specifically based at Vredendal Hospital in the Matzikama Sub-district. The role is a vital part of the hospital’s support team, ensuring that the environment remains clean, safe, and hygienic for patients, staff, and visitors. As one of two available posts, the successful candidates will work within a busy hospital setting, providing essential domestic and hygiene services that underpin infection control and overall patient wellbeing. The position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and forms part of the broader provincial health services team.

To be considered for this role, applicants must possess basic numeracy and literacy skills, which are essential for understanding cleaning schedules, stock control, and safety instructions. Previous appropriate cleaning experience within a health environment is required, along with experience in working with customers or people, as the role involves interacting with patients, visitors, and other staff members on a daily basis. The job demands physical resilience, including the ability to perform hard physical work and stand for long periods. A willingness to relieve colleagues in other departments when needed is also expected, as is flexibility to work shifts, weekends, night duty, and overtime as the hospital’s operational needs dictate. Strong interpersonal skills, good verbal and written communication, and a sound working knowledge of cleaning equipment, materials, detergents, and stock management are all essential competencies for success in this position.

The core duties of the Household Aid revolve around rendering effective, efficient, and safe hygiene and domestic services throughout the hospital. This includes cleaning wards, corridors, offices, and other areas to the required standards, ensuring that all surfaces and facilities are properly sanitised. The role also contributes to the effective management of domestic responsibilities, meaning the post holder will help organise and prioritise cleaning tasks, maintain cleanliness supplies, and ensure that all areas are attended to in a timely manner. Additionally, the Household Aid is responsible for contributing to the effective utilisation and functioning of apparatus, equipment, and stock, which involves using cleaning machinery correctly, reporting faults, and monitoring the usage of detergents and consumables to prevent waste. Adherence to loyal service ethics is a key requirement, ensuring that all duties are carried out with integrity, respect, and a commitment to the hospital’s values.

Shortlisted candidates should note that they will be subjected to a practical test as part of the selection process, allowing them to demonstrate their cleaning skills and knowledge in a real-world setting. There is no fee of any kind required when applying for this post, and all applications should be submitted through the official channels. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and who wish to make a meaningful difference within a community hospital environment. The role offers stable employment within the public health sector and provides a chance to grow within a supportive team, while directly contributing to the comfort and safety of those receiving care.
