This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to patient care and facility operations within the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, specifically at the West Coast TB Centre located at Sonstraal Hospital. As part of the Cape Winelands Health District, the Household Aid plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Two posts are available, and the successful candidates will become integral members of the institutional support team, ensuring that the daily functioning of the TB centre runs smoothly. This is a hands-on role that requires physical stamina, reliability, and a strong commitment to infection prevention and general cleanliness in a healthcare setting.
To be considered for this post, applicants must possess basic literacy and numeracy skills, which are essential for understanding instructions, reading diet lists, and performing simple calculations related to linen supplies. In addition, candidates need appropriate and recognisable experience in cleaning, linen management, and the handling of food. This experience should demonstrate a practical understanding of hygiene standards, safe food service practices, and the proper care and distribution of linen within a facility. The role also carries inherent physical requirements, including the ability to lift and move heavy equipment and supplies. Furthermore, the position demands flexibility to render shift services on weekends, public holidays, and during both day and night hours. Household Aids must be prepared to rotate across different departments according to the operational needs of the centre, which means adaptability and a cooperative attitude are essential.
The core duties of the Household Aid revolve around rendering effective, efficient, and safe hygiene services in the wards. This includes the thorough cleaning of patient areas, bathrooms, and communal spaces to prevent the spread of infection. Another key responsibility is the serving of meals and refreshments to patients, ensuring that dietary instructions are followed correctly and that food is handled in a hygienic manner. The incumbent will also be responsible for the handling and removal of waste, including clinical and general waste, in line with the facility’s safety protocols. Supporting the supervisor is an important aspect of the job, as is the effective utilisation of resources such as cleaning materials, linen, and equipment. The ability to mix cleaning fluids correctly, count and calculate linen supply, and read diet lists are specific competencies required for this role. Good planning, organisational, and interpersonal skills are also necessary to manage multiple tasks and interact positively with patients, colleagues, and supervisors.
This post is advertised through the Provincial Strategic Circular, and applicants should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying. The position offers a stable government salary and the chance to work within a dedicated health team. It is an ideal opportunity for individuals who take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and who wish to make a meaningful difference in a public health facility.
