The Head Clinical Unit position for Internal Medicine Specialist and Subspecialist at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital is a senior leadership post within the Gauteng Department of Health’s Clinical Services directorate. This is a re-advertisement, and previous applicants are explicitly encouraged to apply again. The successful candidate will provide strategic and clinical leadership in Internal Medicine and in one of two subspecialties, either Rheumatology or Endocrinology, serving both the hospital and the wider health cluster. The role requires a medical professional who can combine direct patient care with governance, teaching, research, and the management of junior doctors and clinical teams. The incumbent will also support the Head of Department in maintaining high standards of care and in implementing national protocols and clinical guidelines.
Applicants must hold an MBChB degree, along with an FCP(SA) or MMed in Internal Medicine, and must currently be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine and as a Subspecialist in Rheumatology or Endocrinology. At least five years of experience as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine is required. The post demands a robust profile of clinical expertise, clinical governance, research, and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Strong managerial, interpersonal, leadership, administrative, and communication abilities are essential, as are analytical and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate must be capable of supervising clinical training and teaching across undergraduate, postgraduate, and fellowship levels, while also providing mentorship and direct clinical care to subordinates. The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team is a key requirement. An inherent requirement of the job is performing commuted overtime in the Department of Internal Medicine and/or its subspecialty units.
The main duties include delivering Head of Clinical Unit services in Internal Medicine and/or the relevant subspecialty, contributing to general Internal Medicine and subspecialty services at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and across the cluster, and supporting the Head of Department to ensure efficient patient care standards are maintained. The incumbent will also help disseminate and implement policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines aligned with national norms. A genuine interest in research is expected.
This post is subject to several important conditions. Applications must be submitted strictly online through the E-Recruitment portal, and no hand-delivered, faxed, or emailed applications will be accepted. No payment of any kind is required when applying. Each application must include a fully completed and signed new Z83 form, a comprehensive CV, and proof of HPCSA registration, including the current annual practicing certificate; missing documents will lead to disqualification. Shortlisted candidates will later need to provide certified copies of qualifications and documents not older than six months. Foreign qualifications require SAQA evaluation. Suitable candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, which may include criminal, credit, citizenship, qualification, and employment verification, and may be required to take a skills or knowledge test. Medical surveillance may be required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act if applicable. The department actively promotes representivity in the public service and encourages women and people with disabilities to apply, while reserving the right not to fill the post.
