This vacancy is for two Handyman positions within the Limpopo Department of Health, one based at Siloam Hospital and the other at the Mopani District Office. The role is a general maintenance and repair position within a public healthcare environment, requiring a hands-on individual who can keep buildings, fixtures, furniture and equipment in a safe and functional condition. As part of the departmental support team, the successful candidates will help ensure that health facilities remain operational and compliant with occupational health and safety standards, which is essential for uninterrupted service delivery to patients and staff.

Applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate, Grade 12, or ABET/AET qualification at NQF level 4 as recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). In addition to the formal qualification, the department requires verifiable hands-on competencies in carpentry and joinery, as well as the ability to carry out repairs and installations. Candidates must be comfortable using industrial woodwork machinery and electrical power tools, and must be physically fit to perform the demanding tasks involved. A willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays and to perform standby duties is an inherent requirement of the post. Furthermore, applicants need to be conversant with the General Machinery Regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as these govern much of the daily work and ensure safe working practices.

Key duties include undertaking general maintenance of buildings, carrying out minor repairs and maintenance to hospital structures, assisting with repairs and emergency breakdowns — including after-hours call-outs — and maintaining and repairing plant equipment, furniture, fixtures and mechanical fittings. This work is vital in a hospital or district office setting, where faulty equipment or damaged infrastructure can disrupt essential services. The role therefore demands a proactive, reliable person who can prioritise tasks and respond quickly to urgent situations.

Candidates should note the department’s strict application requirements. A fully completed and signed new Z83 form must be submitted along with a comprehensive CV, and online applicants must attach the CV in PDF format only, as zipped, IMG or JPEG documents will not be accepted. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and present certified copies of qualifications and ID. While the post is not a Senior Management Service position, the application process includes pre-entry assessments for shortlisted candidates, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and the department emphasises that incomplete or non-compliant applications will be disqualified. These two posts offer an opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and safety of public health infrastructure in Limpopo.
