Groundsman (Grounds and Gardening) (Permanent position)

This permanent position of Groundsman within the Grounds and Gardening unit at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley offers an opportunity to contribute to the upkeep and presentation of a major public healthcare facility. The role is essential to maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors, as the hospital's outdoor spaces form an important part of the overall campus experience. Working under the direction of a supervisor, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day horticultural care of the facility's gardens and terrain, ensuring that these areas remain neat, healthy and well-presented throughout the year.

Candidates wishing to apply should possess appropriate practical experience working in a grounds and gardening environment, supported by basic literacy and numeracy skills. The inherent requirements of the job include the ability to operate garden machinery such as lawn mowers and brush cutters, as well as holding a valid code B or EB driving licence. In addition, the ability to operate and drive a tractor is essential, as this forms part of the routine maintenance work. Strong gardening skills, including knowledge of landscaping and irrigation systems, are required, along with good written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with supervisors and other team members.

The core duties of the role involve the development and maintenance of the facility's gardens and terrain, including the care and upkeep of machinery. The groundsman will be responsible for preparing ground covers for the planting of trees and bushes, maintaining flower beds and other planted areas, and ensuring that all horticultural aspects of the grounds are properly attended to. This includes tasks such as planting, weeding, pruning, watering and general landscaping work. Supporting the supervisor in daily operations is also a key responsibility, which may involve assisting with planning, carrying out instructions and reporting on the condition of the grounds.
