The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for the 2027/2029 intake, with five posts based at the Head Office. This structured 24-month programme is designed for unemployed South African graduates who hold a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering and who have never previously participated in a Public Service Graduate Internship. Successful candidates will be appointed from 01 April 2027 to 31 March 2029 and will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes. The internship is part of the department’s broader commitment to developing young engineering talent and building a pipeline of skilled professionals for the province’s roads and infrastructure sector.

Interns placed in this programme will be based within the roads maintenance environment at Head Office, where they will gain hands-on workplace experience under the guidance of senior engineers and technical specialists. While the specific duties are aligned to the operational needs of the department, the programme is intended to expose graduates to the full project cycle of road infrastructure maintenance, including planning, design support, site inspections, condition assessments, contract administration, quality control, and reporting. Interns will also be expected to familiarise themselves with departmental policies, public service regulations, and relevant engineering standards, and to contribute to the efficient delivery of roads maintenance services across the province.

Applicants must hold a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering and must be able to demonstrate that they are unemployed South African youth requiring workplace experience. A valid driver’s licence is required, as is a Grade 12 certificate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their identity document, Grade 12 certificate, and qualifications, and all foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The selection process includes security clearance, verification of qualifications, and two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. The recommended candidate will also undergo a personnel suitability check.

The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and the employment decision will be informed by its Employment Equity Plan. Women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful, though they may seek reasons for the decision in terms of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act. Candidates invited for interviews must note that the department will not cover any costs related to transport, accommodation, or meals. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring civil engineers to launch their careers in the public sector while contributing to the maintenance and development of Limpopo’s road infrastructure.
