The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for 2027/2029, with three positions available in the Capricorn District. This is a structured 24-month workplace experience opportunity aimed at unemployed South African graduates who have never participated in a Public Service Graduate Internship in any government department. The programme is specifically focused on roads maintenance, and is ideal for graduates who wish to build a career in civil or mechanical engineering within the public infrastructure sector.
Interns selected for the programme will be placed within the roads maintenance unit of the Capricorn District, where they will be exposed to the practical realities of maintaining provincial road networks. The internship is designed to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice, allowing graduates to apply their engineering knowledge to real-world road maintenance challenges. While the specific duties will be assigned by the district based on operational needs, the intern can expect to be involved in supporting the planning, coordination, and oversight of road maintenance activities, assisting with technical inspections, preparing reports, and contributing to the broader engineering functions of the department. The programme runs for a fixed 24-month period, and interns will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s Directive on Employment of Persons on Developmental Programmes in the Public Service.
To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering. They must be unemployed, be South African youth, and require workplace experience as part of their professional development. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as it is part of the supporting documentation. Applicants with foreign qualifications must ensure that their qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before applying. The application process requires completion of the prescribed Z83 form and submission of a comprehensive CV, along with copies of qualifications, identity document, and driver’s licence when applying through the e-recruitment system. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their documents on or before the day of the interview.
All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to security clearance, verification of qualifications, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment. The recommended candidate will also undergo a Personnel Suitability Check. The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and the employment decision will be informed by its Employment Equity Plan. Women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. If applicants do not hear from the department within three months after the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful. Candidates invited for interviews must note that the department will not cover any costs related to transport, accommodation, or meals. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for graduates to gain meaningful public service experience and contribute to the maintenance of Limpopo’s road infrastructure.
