The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for the 2027/2029 cycle, with three posts available in the Mopani District. This is a structured 24-month workplace experience opportunity designed for unemployed South African graduates who need practical exposure to fulfil the requirements of their qualifications. The programme falls under the Infrastructure Management unit, which means successful interns will be placed within a professional environment focused on the planning, delivery, maintenance and oversight of public infrastructure projects. Interns will be appointed from 01 April 2027 to 31 March 2029 and will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes in the public service. The position is an OSD-graded developmental post, intended to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering. This is the core academic requirement, and candidates must be able to provide proof of their qualification. The programme is open specifically to unemployed South African youth who have never participated in any Public Service Graduate Internship programme in any government department. This is an important eligibility condition, as the initiative aims to give first-time workplace exposure to graduates. Applicants with foreign qualifications must ensure that their qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before applying. In addition, candidates must be prepared to undergo a security clearance and verification of qualifications if shortlisted.

The main duties of the interns will revolve around supporting the Infrastructure Management unit within the Mopani District. While the specific tasks will depend on the operational needs of the department, interns can expect to assist with engineering-related functions such as project planning, site inspections, data collection, condition assessments, preparation of reports, and supporting senior engineers and technical staff in the execution of infrastructure projects. The internship is designed to provide meaningful workplace exposure, allowing graduates to apply their theoretical knowledge to real public sector infrastructure challenges. Interns will also be expected to participate in administrative and coordination activities linked to the unit’s deliverables, and to comply with departmental policies, procedures and professional standards.

The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment. The recommended candidate will also be subjected to a Personnel Suitability Check. Applications must be submitted through the department’s e-recruitment system, accompanied by a comprehensive CV and the prescribed Z83 application form, with certified copies of qualifications, identity documents and driver’s licences required at the appropriate stage. Candidates should note that the department reserves the right not to make appointments, and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. The department will not cover travel, accommodation or meal costs for candidates attending interviews. This internship offers a valuable entry point for aspiring engineers to build a career in the public service while contributing to infrastructure development in Limpopo.
