The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for the 2027/2029 intake, with three posts available in the Waterberg District. This structured 24-month programme is designed for unemployed South African graduates who are seeking meaningful workplace experience in the public service. Interns will be appointed from 01 April 2027 to 31 March 2029 and will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes. The programme is situated within the department’s roads maintenance environment, providing successful candidates with the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real-world infrastructure challenges while contributing to the provincial roads network.

The internship is specifically aimed at graduates who have completed a National Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Environmental Management. These fields are central to the planning, execution, and oversight of road maintenance and infrastructure projects. Applicants must be unemployed South African youth who have never participated in any Public Service Graduate Internship programme in any government department. This requirement ensures that the opportunity is directed at those who genuinely need the exposure to enter the labour market. Candidates should also be in possession of a valid driver’s licence, as this is likely to be necessary for site visits and field-related duties.

During the 24-month period, interns will be expected to engage in a range of activities that support the department’s core mandate. While the specific duties will depend on the operational needs of the Waterberg District, the programme is intended to provide practical experience in road maintenance, construction project management, and environmental management. Interns will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, assisting with the preparation and monitoring of maintenance plans, participating in site inspections, supporting contractor supervision, and helping to ensure that environmental regulations are observed during infrastructure works. The experience gained will be invaluable for graduates seeking to build careers in the public infrastructure sector.

The department has outlined a transparent and rigorous selection process. All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to security clearance, verification of qualifications, and a personnel suitability check. In addition, shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment to evaluate ethical conduct. Candidates with foreign qualifications must ensure that their qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. The final employment decision will be informed by the department’s Employment Equity Plan. The department also reserves the right not to make any appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only. Applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful. This internship offers a valuable entry point for graduates to gain structured workplace experience within a government department dedicated to roads and infrastructure development.
