The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme within its Properties and Facilities Unit, with three positions available at the Waterberg District. This is a structured 24-month workplace experience opportunity aimed at unemployed South African graduates who need practical exposure to fulfil the requirements of their qualifications. Successful interns will be placed in the Properties and Facilities Unit, where they will work under supervision and gain hands-on experience in the management and maintenance of government property and infrastructure. The programme is part of the department’s broader effort to develop young professionals and build a skilled workforce in the public service, particularly in the fields of real estate, property management, and horticulture or landscaping.
To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Real Estate, Property Studies, Property Management, or alternatively in Horticulture or Landscaping. Candidates must be unemployed South African youth who have never participated in any Public Service Graduate Internship programme in any government department. A valid driver’s licence is required, and applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate as a basic entry requirement. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before application. Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of their identity document, Grade 12 certificate, and relevant qualifications on or before the day of the interview.
The internship is designed to provide practical work experience that complements the theoretical knowledge gained through tertiary study. Interns in the Properties and Facilities Unit can expect to be involved in a range of activities relating to the administration and upkeep of the department’s property portfolio. This may include assisting with property records and documentation, supporting lease and rental administration, participating in site inspections, and helping to coordinate maintenance and repair work. For those with a horticulture or landscaping background, duties may involve planning and maintaining landscaped areas around government buildings, overseeing planting projects, and ensuring that outdoor facilities are kept in a safe and presentable condition. The programme aims to expose interns to the full scope of the unit’s work, including interaction with service providers, internal stakeholders, and the public, while developing professional skills such as report writing, communication, and project coordination.
All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to a security clearance and verification of qualifications, as well as two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and an integrity assessment to evaluate ethical conduct. The recommended candidate will also undergo a Personnel Suitability Check. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment, and the employment decision will be informed by the department’s Employment Equity Plan. The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Interns will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes in the public service. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. Candidates attending interviews will be responsible for their own transport, accommodation, and meal costs. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for graduates to gain meaningful public service experience and develop a career in property and facilities management.
