This position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified Geographic Information Science professional to contribute to the production side of a government department's spatial data operations, based in Durban. The role is a three-year contract appointment, graded at the GISc Technician level from Grade A to C, and forms part of the department's ongoing technical work in producing and maintaining spatial information. As a production-focused technician, the successful candidate will be expected to apply their technical expertise to support the unit's core mandate, ensuring that geographic data is accurate, up-to-date, and fit for purpose across various applications.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma in GISc, Cartography, or a closely related qualification, and must have at least three years of post-qualification technical experience in the GISc field. Compulsory registration with PLATO as a GISc Technician is a firm requirement, as is possession of a valid driver's licence. The role demands a solid theoretical and practical grounding in GIS applications, spatial data queries, and the principles and practices of GISc standards. Familiarity with a range of GISc software packages, including their customisation, is essential, along with an understanding of supporting technologies such as GPS, photogrammetry, and remote sensing. Knowledge of map projections and cartographic principles is also expected, as the role involves producing and refining spatial outputs.
The core duties revolve around performing technical GISc activities, maintaining the effectiveness of the GISc unit, and contributing to people management within the team. The technician will also be responsible for functional requirement analysis, which involves assessing and documenting the needs of the unit to ensure that systems and processes remain aligned with operational goals. Beyond the technical scope, the position requires strong problem-solving and analytical skills, sound decision-making, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Creativity, self-management, and a customer-service orientation are important, as is the capacity to communicate effectively and maintain strong interpersonal relations. Advanced computer skills, project management ability, and proficiency in planning, organising, and execution are all necessary to manage competing priorities. The successful candidate must be able to perform well under pressure, demonstrate honesty and integrity, and be willing to work extra hours when required.
This is an OSD-graded position, and the post is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular. Enquiries may be directed to the named contact person within the department. As with all public service posts, the department will apply its employment equity targets in the selection process, and candidates should be prepared to meet the stringent registration and qualification criteria outlined above.
