Vhembe TVET College is seeking to fill four General Worker positions at its Makhado Satellite Shingwedzi Campus. These roles sit within the college’s Corporate Services unit and are central to keeping the campus environment safe, clean, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. As a General Worker, you will be part of a team responsible for the ongoing upkeep of the college grounds and facilities, ensuring that outdoor spaces remain functional and presentable throughout the academic year. The position is ideal for individuals who take pride in physical work, enjoy working outdoors, and are committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and order.
To be considered for this role, applicants must have ABET Level 4 or Grade 10, and must be able to read and write. While not mandatory, a cleaning training certificate will serve as an advantage, as will six months of previous experience working as a cleaner. These additional qualifications are valued because they demonstrate a foundational understanding of cleaning practices, safety awareness, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. The role demands reliability, attention to detail, and the physical capability to handle a variety of groundskeeping and maintenance tasks.
The core duties of the position are broad and hands-on. You will be expected to cut and maintain grass and lawns, trim hedges, trees, and shrubs, remove weeds, leaves, branches, and other garden debris, and maintain flower beds and landscaped areas. You will also sweep and clean pathways and parking areas, collect and dispose of litter and garden waste, and keep entrances and surrounding areas neat and presentable. Planting flowers, trees, grass, and other plants, as well as watering and fertilizing lawns and plants, are routine responsibilities. You will prune trees and shrubs when necessary and assist with maintaining irrigation systems. Operating and maintaining basic gardening equipment such as lawnmowers, brush cutters, wheelbarrows, and other hand tools is a key part of the job, and you must clean and store equipment properly after each use. You will also be responsible for reporting damaged or faulty equipment, damaged infrastructure, blocked drains, leaking pipes, and other faults, as well as identifying and reporting hazards on the college grounds. Ensuring that pathways and entrances are free from obstructions is essential for safety. Additionally, you may assist in preparing outdoor areas for college events, meetings, and functions, arranging and moving outdoor furniture and equipment, and cleaning the grounds after events. You will also support maintenance staff and other Corporate Services personnel when required, including loading, unloading, and moving materials and equipment, and performing any other reasonable duties assigned by your supervisor.
Vhembe TVET College is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and actively encourages applications from persons with disabilities. The college operates across four local municipalities and values a diverse workforce. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. Both assessments will be scored by the selection panel as additional criteria during the interview process. Final selection is subject to background vetting, credentials verification, and financial disclosure checks. Due to the high volume of applications, communication will be limited to shortlisted candidates only; if you do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. When applying, you must submit a detailed CV highlighting your relevant qualifications and experience, with at least two contactable references, along with a completed and signed Z83 application form (2021 version). Certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents are only required on or before the interview date. Late submissions will not be considered, and the college reserves the right to withdraw any post at any stage. This is a valuable opportunity to contribute to the smooth operation of a public technical and vocational education institution while gaining practical experience in grounds maintenance and facilities support.
