The Department of Water and Sanitation is advertising two General Worker positions within the Western Cape Provincial Operations, under the Water and Sanitation Services Management branch. One post is based in Worcester and the other in George. These are entry-level roles at salary level 02, forming part of the department's broader effort to maintain water infrastructure and support water resource management in the region. The successful incumbents will work as part of a team responsible for the upkeep and functioning of gauging stations, which are critical for monitoring rivers, canals, dams, evaporation stations and estuaries. The work is largely field-based and involves spending extended periods away from the office, often in or near water bodies.

Candidates must hold an ABET certificate. While one to two years of relevant experience would be an added advantage, it is not strictly required. The department is looking for individuals with practical knowledge of gardening equipment and appliances, lawn care processes, pruning and trimming techniques, and the safe use of chemical products including dilution and mixing. Knowledge of daily maintenance procedures for machinery and equipment, basic understanding of water utilisation and water resource strategies, and familiarity with health and safety procedures are also expected. Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team are essential, as are punctuality, productivity and loyalty. Applicants must be comfortable working in or near rivers, dams and canals, and must be willing to travel continuously as part of their duties.

The core duties involve carrying out routine and structural maintenance at gauging stations using hand and power tools. This includes painting, weed control, replacing steel components, stabilising and clearing vegetation on embankments, clearing and maintaining access roads, and refurbishing gauging stations. Incumbents may also be involved in the construction of gauging weirs and related infrastructure, and may be called upon to assist with technical and special tasks such as instrument installations and flood monitoring. Other responsibilities include general maintenance and housekeeping of camping facilities, caring for machinery, equipment, tools and goods, and loading and offloading materials. Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all related safety regulations is mandatory, and any faults, defects or safety hazards must be reported to a supervisor promptly.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is an equal opportunity employer and will apply the Employment Equity imperatives of the Constitution and the Employment Equity Act when filling these posts. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and preference will be given to EE targets. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to suitability checks, including SAQA verification, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate when shortlisted. Applicants should note that correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and if no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, the application should be regarded as unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill these positions. Applications must be submitted online, and no late or faxed applications will be accepted.
