This position offers an entry-level opportunity within the Department of Water and Sanitation, specifically under the Branch of Infrastructure Management, Central Operations. The successful candidate will be based at the Usutu Vaal Area Office in Standerton and will support the broader Water Resource Infrastructure Operations and Maintenance division. As a General Stores Assistant, the role is central to ensuring that the maintenance and operational teams have the necessary materials, equipment, and supplies to carry out their work efficiently. The position is graded at a junior administrative and support level, reflecting its foundational nature within the stores and logistics function of the department.

The core responsibilities revolve around the daily handling of stock and materials. This includes receiving deliveries, verifying quantities and quality against documentation, and distributing items to the appropriate internal users or project sites. The assistant will manage the issuing of stock, ensuring that all transactions are accurately recorded and that inventory levels are maintained within approved thresholds. Maintaining meticulous documentation and generating routine reports on stock movements, shortages, or damages is a key part of the role. The position also demands a strong focus on safe and organised storage, meaning the assistant must keep the warehouse or stores area clean, tidy, and compliant with health and safety regulations. Additionally, the role involves coordinating stock logistics, such as preparing orders for dispatch, arranging internal transfers, and supporting operational teams with timely access to required materials. Working under supervision, the assistant will also be expected to contribute to team efforts, handle pressure during peak demand, and follow established procedures without deviation.

To be considered, applicants must possess a relevant qualification at NQF Level 1, which typically indicates basic literacy and numeracy. A minimum of one year of practical experience in a stores or warehouse environment is essential, as this ensures familiarity with receiving, issuing, and stock control processes. Knowledge of health and safety procedures is mandatory, as is a basic understanding of government legislation that governs procurement and asset management. The ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally, is required for accurate record-keeping and interaction with colleagues and suppliers. While not a strict requirement, holding a valid, unexpired driver’s licence is considered an added advantage, as it may be needed for occasional local deliveries or collections. The successful candidate must be comfortable working under supervision, but also capable of working independently when required, and should thrive in a team-oriented environment that can be demanding at times.

Candidates should note that the selection process may include a practical and theoretical test to assess their knowledge of stores procedures and safety protocols. Furthermore, the office is scheduled to transition to the South African National Water Resources Infrastructure agency, meaning the successful applicant should be prepared for potential administrative or organisational changes during their employment. This role is ideal for individuals seeking to build a career in logistics and stores management within the public sector, offering a stable work environment and the chance to contribute directly to the maintenance of critical water infrastructure.
