This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the smooth operation of a public health facility as a General Stores Assistant within the Overberg District, specifically based at Caledon Hospital. The role is situated within the Supply Chain Section of the facility, where the successful candidate will provide essential support to the Warehouse Clerk and help ensure that all stock and stores-related activities are carried out efficiently. This is a hands-on, physically demanding role that requires a reliable individual who is comfortable working in a fast-paced hospital environment and can adapt to changing priorities.

Applicants must possess basic literacy and numeracy skills, along with appropriate experience in a stores environment. In addition, the job has inherent requirements that are non-negotiable, including a valid Code B/EB driver’s licence. The role demands physical fitness to handle stock, a willingness to rotate within the Supply Chain Section and relieve colleagues as needed, and a readiness to work overtime on short notice. Candidates should also bring strong competencies to the table, including good verbal and written communication skills, computer literacy in MS Office, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The job calls for problem-solving abilities, conflict management skills, good organisational skills, and the capacity to maintain confidentiality in a medical setting.

The main duties are varied and integral to the hospital’s daily operations. The General Stores Assistant will assist the Warehouse Clerk with the handling of stock, including receiving and issuing goods, delivering store stock to end-users, and rotating store stock according to the first-in, first-out principle. The role also involves performing certain messenger duties within the hospital environment when required, as well as cleaning various stores and non-storage areas within the main stores. When needed, the incumbent will assist in other stores and help the Warehouse Clerk with capturing requisitions and issuing vouchers on the Logis system. Handling written or telephonic queries regarding warehouse management matters is another key responsibility, as is providing relief duties and support to the supervisor as required.

This post is advertised as part of a public service circular and is graded accordingly. It is important to note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this position, and candidates may be subjected to a practical test as part of the selection process. This is a supportive role within a district hospital, making it ideal for someone who thrives on organisation, teamwork, and contributing to the effective delivery of health services.
