This position offers an entry-level opportunity within the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, based at the Mzimkhulu Estate in KwaZulu-Natal. As a Forestry Service Aid focused on woodlands and indigenous forest management, the successful candidate will support the department’s conservation and production objectives by carrying out hands-on silviculture, rehabilitation, fire protection and harvesting support duties. The role is ideal for individuals who are comfortable working outdoors, have a practical understanding of plantation and indigenous forest care, and are able to follow instructions while working effectively as part of a team.

Applicants must have at least a Grade 9 certificate or an ABET Level 1 or 2 qualification. Beyond formal schooling, the role demands practical knowledge of planting techniques, firefighting methods and coppice reduction. Strong communication, interpersonal and listening skills are essential, as is the ability to plan and execute tasks responsibly. The department also looks for candidates who demonstrate sound interpersonal relations, accept responsibility, work well in teams and exercise self-discipline in sometimes physically demanding conditions.

The core duties are varied and centre on the sustainable management of forested areas. The incumbent will render silviculture functions within both planted and indigenous forests, rehabilitate degraded sites, and carry out marking of plots, counting and marking of trees, and coppice reduction. Record-keeping is an important part of the job: the role requires updating various registers relating to planting, weeding (both manual and chemical), conservation zone maintenance and the removal of alien species. Fire protection and suppression duties are also central, along with controlling pest and weed infections and protecting infrastructure. The position includes infrastructure maintenance responsibilities and extends into harvesting services, such as log marking and pole measuring. In addition, the incumbent will propagate plants and trees, maintain accurate records of these activities, and produce and process poles through cutting, drying and treatment. There is also a customer-facing element, as the role provides support in the selling of poles.

This is a government post with a structured remuneration package and is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular. Interested applicants must apply online using the department’s e-recruitment portal, completing the full Z83 form and attaching a detailed CV with at least three contactable references. Failure to disclose all required information will lead to disqualification. Shortlisted candidates will need to produce certified copies of their qualifications, identity document and driver’s licence before the interview, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and may give preference to candidates from underrepresented designated groups in line with its equity plan; persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. All shortlisted applicants will undergo screening and security vetting, including criminal record, citizenship, creditworthiness, employment reference and qualification verification. The department reserves the right not to appoint, and only successful candidates will be contacted. By applying, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
