This position offers an opportunity to join the Department of the Premier within the Western Cape Government as a Forensic Consultant focused on proactive forensic work. The role sits within a specialised unit dedicated to fighting fraud and corruption across the provincial public sector. As a proactive forensic specialist, you will not be investigating after the fact; instead, you will be building the systems, strategies, and awareness that prevent wrongdoing from happening in the first place. The work is strategic and collaborative, supporting thirteen provincial departments in embedding anti-corruption measures into their daily operations. You will be part of a team that shapes policy, trains staff, and uses data to spot risks before they become serious problems, making this a vital role for safeguarding public resources and maintaining ethical governance.
To be considered, you need an appropriate three-year Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent or higher qualification, along with at least three years of relevant professional experience. A valid driving licence (Code B or higher) is also required, as the role may involve travel between departmental sites or stakeholder meetings. Beyond the formal requirements, the position calls for someone with a strong analytical mindset, sound judgement, and the ability to communicate clearly across different audiences. Experience in fraud prevention, risk assessment, or public sector governance would be advantageous, though the core requirement is a solid foundation in the relevant field combined with practical experience.
Your main duties will revolve around developing and refining strategies for fraud detection and prevention. You will contribute to the Western Cape Government’s Anti-Corruption Strategy, Whistle-blowing Policy, and related policies, helping to keep them current and effective. You will support the managers of Proactive Forensics in creating and maintaining fraud prevention and implementation plans for thirteen provincial departments, and you will monitor progress on agreed projects against those plans. Training is another key responsibility: you will help design fraud and corruption awareness content, deliver training sessions, and take part in broader awareness campaigns. You will also identify business areas where data analytics can be used to uncover vulnerabilities, assist in running those analytics projects, and facilitate departmental fraud risk assessments using the approved methodology, while tracking the action plans that come out of those assessments.
Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a rigorous selection process. You will need to attend interviews on a date set by the department and submit completed vetting and supporting documentation before the interview. Failure to provide these documents on time, without a reasonable explanation, could remove you from consideration. All shortlisted candidates will also complete two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment measuring ethical conduct. The selection process will follow the employment equity targets of the department, so candidates from designated groups are encouraged to apply. By applying, you consent to the Western Cape Government contacting your previous employers or managers for references, including checks on your disciplinary record and reasons for leaving previous positions. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone committed to clean governance and proactive public sector integrity.
