The Department of Employment and Labour in Mpumalanga is seeking a Field ICT Technician to join its provincial office, playing a key role in maintaining the information and communication technology systems that underpin the department’s public service delivery. Based in Emalahleni, this hands-on position involves supporting the daily operations of desktop computers, printers, and the local area network, ensuring that staff across the office can work without interruption. As part of the broader ICT unit, the technician will contribute to a stable and secure technical environment, helping the department meet its service delivery commitments to citizens. This is a permanent government post, advertised through the public service vacancy circular, and offers an opportunity to work within a structured, policy-driven environment.

Applicants must hold a three-year National Diploma at NQF level 6 or an undergraduate degree at NQF level 7 in Information Technology or Information Systems, together with a valid driver’s licence. In addition, at least two years of functional experience in the ICT field, specifically within a technical support environment, is required. This experience should include a practical understanding of network connectivity technologies, as well as exposure to end-user support and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will also possess knowledge of technical standards and procedures, operating systems, Active Directory, backup technologies and processes, ICT service management processes, and departmental policies. Familiarity with the Batho Pele principles, which guide respectful and efficient public service, is also expected.

The role demands a blend of technical and interpersonal skills. Strong communication abilities are essential for explaining solutions to non-technical users, while analytical thinking helps diagnose complex problems and identify root causes. The technician should also demonstrate process improvement capabilities, leadership potential, good interpersonal relations, and attentive listening skills. These qualities are vital for working effectively within a team and for maintaining a professional, user-focused approach to ICT support.

The main duties of the position are centred on three core areas. First, the technician will provide desktop and printer support, which includes installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing hardware and software on user workstations and printing devices. Second, the role involves call management on the Information Technology Service Management system, meaning the technician will log, track, prioritise, and resolve support requests in line with service level agreements. Third, the technician will provide Local Area Network support, covering network points, cabling, switches, and basic connectivity issues. All duties must be carried out in accordance with the department’s ICT service management framework and established procedures.

This position carries an employment equity target, with priority given to African Males, Coloured Males, Indian Males, Indian Females, White Males, and People with Disability. Candidates should note that a valid driver’s licence is a strict requirement, and the ability to travel within the province may be necessary. The closing date and application instructions are provided in the circular, and enquiries may be directed to the contact person listed in the advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for an ICT professional seeking to apply their technical skills in a meaningful public service context, while gaining valuable experience in a government environment.
