This position offers an entry-level opportunity within the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s farming operations at Elsenburg. As a Farm Aid, the successful candidate will be an integral part of a team responsible for the day-to-day functioning of a working farm, supporting both crop and livestock enterprises as well as the infrastructure that keeps the farm operational. The role is graded at a junior support level, making it suitable for individuals with a foundational qualification and a practical understanding of agricultural work.
Applicants must hold an ABET level 2 certificate or an equivalent qualification. Beyond formal education, the role demands a solid working knowledge of farm infrastructure construction and maintenance, general farmwork, and the care of farm animals and pastures. Practical skills in verbal communication, numeracy, literacy, and driving are essential, as is the ability to operate farm equipment. The work requires both independence and teamwork, as the farm aid will often need to complete tasks without direct supervision while also collaborating with other staff members.
The core duties span several areas. In crop production, the farm aid will perform irrigation, soil cultivation and preparation, including cleaning and hoeing. In livestock management, responsibilities include caring for sick animals, and carrying out dipping, vaccination, and dosing procedures. General farm duties involve cleaning facilities and disposing of farm waste material. Infrastructure maintenance is a significant component: the role entails building and maintaining roads, fences, pipelines, canals, dams, drinking troughs, animal housing and buildings, as well as maintaining windmills and the water supply system. This variety ensures that no two days are alike and provides broad exposure to agricultural operations.
The post is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular, and interested applicants should note that the selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. Preference will be given to applicants from relevant local communities, reflecting the department’s commitment to local employment and transformation. Candidates must submit a completed application form and a concise CV, ensuring that the post title and reference number are clearly indicated. It is important to note that late applications or faxed copies will not be considered, and if no correspondence is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should regard their application as unsuccessful. This is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable working outdoors, enjoys practical tasks, and is keen to contribute to the agricultural sector in the Western Cape.
