This position offers an opportunity to work as a Farm Aid within the Farm Services unit at Langgewens, based in Moorreesburg, under the Department of Agriculture in the Western Cape Government. The role is hands-on and essential to the daily functioning of the farm, supporting both crop and livestock operations as well as the broader infrastructure that keeps the farm running. As a Farm Aid, you would be part of a team that ensures the farm’s productivity and safety, working across a variety of tasks that require practical skill, physical effort, and a solid understanding of agricultural environments. The post is graded at an entry-level salary band, making it suitable for individuals with foundational agricultural knowledge who are ready to contribute to a government-run farming operation.
To be considered for this role, candidates must hold an ABET level 2 certificate or an equivalent qualification. Beyond formal education, the role demands a working knowledge of farm infrastructure construction and maintenance, general maintenance of infrastructure, general farmwork, and experience or understanding of working with farm animals and pastures. Essential skills include verbal communication, numeracy, literacy, and the ability to drive and operate farm equipment. You should also be capable of working independently and as part of a team, as the duties require both self-directed tasks and collaboration with colleagues. These competencies are critical because the work spans multiple areas of farm operations, from tending to animals to repairing essential water systems.
The main duties are varied and physically engaging. In crop production, you will be responsible for irrigating crops, cultivating and preparing soil, and performing cleaning and hoeing tasks. On the livestock side, duties include caring for sick animals, as well as dipping, vaccinating, and dosing livestock to maintain their health. General farm activities involve cleaning facilities and disposing of farm waste material in a responsible manner. Infrastructure work is also a significant part of the role: you will help maintain and build roads, fences, pipelines, canals, dams, drinking troughs, animal housing, and buildings. Additionally, you will maintain windmills and the water supply system, ensuring that the farm has reliable water access for both animals and crops.
This vacancy is part of a broader public service recruitment drive, and there are a few notable conditions to keep in mind. Applicants from relevant local communities will receive preference, and the selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. This means that the recruitment aims to be inclusive and reflective of the surrounding community. If you are interested in a practical, outdoor role within a government agricultural setting, this position provides a solid entry point with clear responsibilities and the chance to develop a wide range of farming and maintenance skills.
