This position forms part of the Expanded Public Works Programme within the Public Safety Department of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, based in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. The role is a temporary employment opportunity lasting twelve months and is focused on supporting community safety and law enforcement efforts in the municipal area. Successful candidates will be deployed as EPWP law enforcement officers, contributing to the broader mandate of maintaining order and ensuring that both national legislation and local by-laws are respected. The work is practical and field-based, requiring a visible presence in public spaces and a proactive approach to safety and security.
The core responsibilities revolve around performing tasks associated with safeguarding people and property. This includes applying established policing, protection and rescue procedures in line with the municipality’s operational guidelines. A key part of the daily routine involves monitoring parked vehicles across various streets and parking areas, particularly around the central business district and beachfront zones. This duty is aimed at deterring crime, preventing vehicle-related offences, and ensuring that public parking areas remain safe and orderly. Officers are also expected to assist in processes that ensure compliance with laws, by-laws and regulations, which may involve reporting incidents, liaising with other enforcement agencies, and taking appropriate action within the scope of their training and authority.
To be considered for this role, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate as the basic educational requirement. In addition, a Traffic Warden or Peace Officer Certificate is mandatory, as this provides the legal and procedural foundation for the enforcement duties involved. A valid driving licence Code B or higher is also required, as the ability to move around the area and respond to incidents is essential. A police clearance certificate is a critical condition of employment, and it must be valid and not older than six months on the day of the interview. While not compulsory, holding a Firearm Competence Certificate will be an added advantage, as it may expand the range of duties an officer can perform or increase their suitability for certain assignments.
Applicants should note that due to the high volume of applications expected, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you do not hear back within thirty days of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. The municipality also reserves the right not to make any appointment in this vacancy. This is an EPWP contract position, meaning it is part of a government initiative aimed at providing work experience and temporary employment. The role offers an opportunity to contribute directly to public safety in Mthatha while gaining valuable practical experience in municipal law enforcement. Candidates should be prepared for outdoor work, shift-based duties, and the need to exercise sound judgement in sometimes challenging situations.
