This is a contract appointment for an Environmental Officer based at Marion Island, one of South Africa’s sub-Antarctic research stations. The role is central to supporting the Department of Environmental Affairs’ broader mandate to protect the Prince Edward Islands, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. The successful candidate will be deployed to the island for a full year, from April 2027 to May 2028, and must be prepared for a uniquely isolated working environment. While the base is equipped with email, satellite telephone and fax facilities, the incumbent must be highly self-sufficient and self-motivated, as there is no option to return to South Africa before the end of the deployment. The role requires someone who can live and work harmoniously within a small, close-knit group, often under extreme conditions and pressure.
To be considered, applicants need a National Diploma in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Conservation, or a comparable natural sciences qualification at NQF level 6, recognised by SAQA. At least two years of relevant experience is required. Candidates must demonstrate a working knowledge of public service and departmental procedures and prescripts, environmental legislation, invasion ecology, and plant identification. Strong skills in computer use, professional and report writing, interpersonal relations, diplomacy, relationship management, stakeholder engagement, presentation, and both verbal and written research communication are essential. The department is seeking individuals with proven competencies in teamwork, honesty, integrity, reliability, information gathering and analysis, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Physical resilience is non-negotiable, as the role demands walking in the field under extreme weather conditions, working under minimal supervision, handling difficult persons, and resolving conflict while under considerable stress.
The main duties are broad and environmentally critical. The officer will implement biosecurity measures and promote general environmental awareness across the base and its operations. They will also implement the Alien Eradication Plan targeting plants, invertebrates and rodents, as well as the Prince Edward Islands Management Plan and associated legislation. Monitoring compliance with Environmental Authorisations issued under the EIA Regulations for activities at the islands is a key responsibility. The officer must ensure the implementation of the SANAP Waste Management Handbook, undertake country clean-up activities, and ensure environmental compliance and auditing. Compiling monthly and annual ECO reports is a routine but vital task, as is managing and conserving threats to environmental integrity and ecosystems.
Short-listed candidates will undergo screening and security vetting, followed by a rigorous medical examination and psychometric assessment at no cost to the applicant. The physical and mental demands of the location are significant, and applicants must be physically fit, mentally strong, and prepared for long hours of work in extreme conditions, sometimes on duties unrelated to their core function. The position is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation and offers a salary package with a lieu benefit in place of certain allowances. It is a challenging but rewarding opportunity for a dedicated environmental professional prepared to contribute to one of the world’s most remote conservation outposts.
