This is a 24-month internship position within the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) at the Government Printing Works (GPW), forming part of the institution’s broader Graduate Programme for the 2027/2029 financial year. The EPMO is responsible for overseeing and coordinating project portfolios across the organisation, and this placement offers a graduate the chance to become familiar with the governance, planning and reporting processes that underpin successful project and programme delivery in a public-sector environment. The intern will be embedded in a professional team and will receive structured work exposure and training directly aligned to their academic background, with a strong focus on building practical competence in the fields of information and communication technology and project management. The programme is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical study and the workplace, giving participants hands-on experience that will enhance their future employability.
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in ICT, Project Management, or a closely related field. In addition, candidates must be unemployed South African citizens and must not have previously participated in any internship programme. Importantly, if an applicant has taken part in an internship before, this must be disclosed; failing to do so will result in the immediate termination of the internship contract on the grounds of dishonesty and undue enrichment. The selection process is competitive and thorough. Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of their qualifications and other supporting documents before the interview date, and those with foreign qualifications must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Personnel suitability checks will also be conducted as part of the selection process, and successful candidates will be expected to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement.
The core duties of the intern will involve active participation in workplace activities, ongoing projects and capacity-building initiatives under the supervision of experienced professionals. This means the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the daily functions of the EPMO, assist with project-related tasks, support data collection and reporting, and collaborate with colleagues across the organisation. The internship is intended to be a developmental opportunity, so the work will be structured to expose the graduate to a variety of tasks that are relevant to their field of study. By the end of the 24-month period, the intern should have gained meaningful insight into how a public entity manages its project portfolio, including resource allocation, risk monitoring, and stakeholder engagement. The Government Printing Works places a strong emphasis on professionalism, integrity and accountability, and all applicants should note that the organisation reserves the right to fill or not fill the advertised post. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should regard their application as unsuccessful. All personal information submitted will be processed in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), solely for the purpose of the recruitment process. Applicants are reminded to follow the application instructions carefully, including using the prescribed Z83 form and noting the relevant post reference details, as applications that do not comply with the specified requirements will not be considered.
