This vacancy offers ten positions for Enrolled Nurses at the Umgeni Specialized Psychiatric Hospital, situated in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidates will join a dedicated multidisciplinary team within a specialised psychiatric facility, providing essential nursing care to patients with mental health conditions. The role is fundamental to the daily functioning of the hospital, ensuring that patients receive compassionate, safe, and legally compliant care within a structured therapeutic environment. As an Enrolled Nurse, you will work under the supervision of senior nursing staff, contributing to the holistic well-being of patients while adhering to the strict regulatory and ethical standards governing the nursing profession in South Africa.
To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12 equivalent, along with an Enrolled Nursing certificate that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse. No prior work experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for newly qualified nurses. However, a solid theoretical foundation is essential. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, as well as a thorough understanding of relevant legal frameworks including the Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patients Right Charter, Batho Pele Principles, Public Service Regulations, Labour Relations Act, and the applicable disciplinary and grievance procedures. Familiarity with SANC rules and regulations is also required. Strong communication, writing, facilitation, and interpersonal skills are vital, as is the ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A basic understanding of clinical nursing care within a specialised psychiatric unit is expected.
The core duties involve developing and implementing basic patient care plans, providing clinical nursing care within the psychiatric unit under supervision, and ensuring the effective utilisation of available resources. You will be responsible for maintaining patient hygiene, comfort, and safety, as well as observing and reporting any changes in patient condition promptly. Accurate record-keeping and reporting are integral to the role, alongside strict adherence to infection prevention and control standards. The position also requires a commitment to maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development, while actively participating as a team member to ensure the delivery of quality patient care.
This is a government post with a structured salary package and benefits such as medical aid (optional) and a housing allowance, subject to meeting prescribed requirements. The appointment is subject to a positive outcome from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) checks, including security clearance, credit records, qualification verification, citizenship, and previous employment verification. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Please note that due to financial constraints, no S&T claims will be paid for interview attendance. Applications must be submitted on the amended Z83 form, accompanied by a detailed CV, with the reference number indicated in the designated column. Copies of qualifications are not required at the application stage; these will be requested from shortlisted candidates only. No faxed applications will be accepted, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates due to the high volume of applications expected. This vacancy is advertised under the Public Service Vacancy Circular.
