The Department of Community Safety is seeking a dedicated and technically proficient Engineering Technician Production specialising in Civil or Structural Engineering to join its Engineering Services directorate at Head Office in Johannesburg. This role operates within a public sector environment where engineering services support the broader safety and infrastructure objectives of the department. The successful candidate will work as part of a professional team, providing technical support to engineers, technologists and associates across field, workshop and technical office activities. This is an OSD-graded position, meaning career progression and salary levels are linked to recognised experience and professional registration, with an initial offer determined by the candidate's proven post-qualification experience.

Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an equivalent relevant qualification, and have at least three years of post-qualification technical experience. Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technician is required. A valid driver's licence is essential. The role demands a solid grasp of public service legislation and regulatory frameworks, including the Public Service Act, Public Service Regulations, PFMA and Treasury Regulations, supply chain management policies, the Government Immovable Asset Management Act, the National Building Standards Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Health Act, and the National Environmental Management Act. In addition, the incumbent must possess strong engineering design and analysis capabilities, programme and project management skills, and proficiency in computer-aided engineering applications. Key competencies include technical report writing, communication, people management, planning, organising, change management, creativity, problem solving, decision making, and a customer-focused, teamwork-oriented attitude.

The core duties are varied and technically demanding. The Engineering Technician will assist professional staff in technical investigations and project execution, promote safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements, and evaluate existing technical manuals, standard drawings and procedures to incorporate new technology. The role includes producing technical designs with specifications and submitting them for evaluation and approval, providing inputs into the budget process, and compiling and submitting technical reports. The incumbent will also contribute to and consolidate inputs for the technical and engineering operational plan, develop and maintain databases, and supervise and control technical personnel and assets. Continuous professional development is expected to keep abreast of new technologies, and the candidate will conduct research and literature studies to improve technical expertise. Liaison with relevant bodies and councils on engineering-related matters is also required.

This position is subject to several special conditions. Applicants must complete the new Z83 application form, and a comprehensive CV must be attached; shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, with technical scoring forming part of the interview process. Personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification, will be conducted. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply. A confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached for applicants with disabilities. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may place candidates according to its operational needs.
