This vacancy is for an Engineering Technician specialising in Occupational Health and Safety within the Education Infrastructure Delivery component of the Limpopo Department of Education, based at Head Office in Polokwane. The post is graded at Engineering Technician Grade A to C and sits within a technical team responsible for supporting the planning, delivery and maintenance of safe education infrastructure. The successful candidate will work closely with professional engineers, technologists and associates, carrying out field, workshop and technical office activities, with a strong emphasis on promoting safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 or Matric certificate together with an engineering qualification at NQF Level 6, recognised by SAQA, and must have at least three years of post-qualification experience in a technical environment. Compulsory registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineering Technician is required, as is a valid driver's licence, except for applicants with disabilities. The department seeks a combination of technical and generic competencies, including project management, technical design and analysis, research and development, computer-aided engineering applications, knowledge of legal compliance, technical report writing, technical consulting, decision making, teamwork, analytical skills, creativity, self-management, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, planning and organising, problem solving, change management and people management.
The duties are broad and include rendering technical services by assisting engineers, technologists and associates in the field, workshop and technical office; promoting safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements; evaluating existing technical manuals, standard drawings and procedures to incorporate new technology; and producing technical designs with specifications for evaluation and approval by the relevant authority. On the administrative side, the post requires providing inputs into the budgeting process, compiling and submitting reports, providing and consolidating inputs to the technical or engineering operational plan, developing, implementing and maintaining databases, and supervising and controlling technical personnel and assets. The role also encompasses research and development, including continuous professional development to keep abreast of new technologies and procedures, conducting research or literature studies on technical engineering technology, and liaising with relevant bodies and councils on engineering-related matters.
The salary package will be determined by the department based on years of experience post professional registration, in line with the advertised grade structure.
