Engineering Technician: Aviation Training Academy

Applications are invited for the position of Engineering Technician at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy in Bedfordview, where the successful candidate will report to the Manager for Training Support and Administration. The role exists to provide robust technical support and associated services to clients, in line with internal and external regulations, directives and procedures celebrating safe and efficient operations. At its core, this role involves delivering and coordinating all activities tied to student engagement and ensuring that the academy’s training platforms are utilised as effectively as possible, so learners experience minimal disruption during both theoretical and practical sessions.

To be considered, candidates must hold a National Diploma in Electronic Engineering, at M3 level, which grants admission to the Engineering Council of South Africa as an Engineering Technician or Technologist. In addition, a minimum of three years of practical experience in operating, maintaining and supporting simulators or similar systems is required, with that experience necessarily covering computer networking, computer programming and computer hardware. Beyond these essential requirements, the ideal applicant would bring graphic design knowledge, experience with a Learner Management System, and familiarity with working in a PFMA-regulated environment. Personal attributes that will stand out include the ability to thrive within a self-directed team, a keen interest in information technology and training simulation, a hard-working and assertive nature, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a strong command of English. Strategic, analytical and tactical thinking are also valued, as the technician must balance day-to-day support with forward-looking improvements.

The responsibilities span the full lifecycle of engineering assets and training infrastructure. On the acquisition side, the technician must ensure that adequate components, equipment and systems are sourced from approved suppliers in line with client specifications and the academy’s Quality Management System, delivered on time, and procured at the best balance of cost, quality and delivery within the approved budget. This includes providing input into budget compilation, expenditure and monitoring. In terms of custody, the role requires registering and securely storing all engineering components, equipment and systems, as well as issuing test equipment according to QMS procedures. The maintenance and client service component is particularly demanding: the technician must keep training equipment and systems available for at least ninety percent of the time as per service level agreements, ensure that classroom and simulator tools are prepared for the training schedule, and prioritise multitasked end-user support so that training systems are restored quickly during the daily timetable. Client requests must be handled timeously and professionally while complying with QMS and occupational health and safety practices, and the technician is expected to evaluate and continuously improve the department’s client services. Finally, the disposal of equipment and academy assets must be carried out according to financial directivesholistic of all applicable OHAS, environmental management and safety requirements.
