This position offers an exciting opportunity for professionally registered civil engineers to contribute to South Africa's water security through strategic planning and resource development. The successful candidates will be appointed as Engineers Production Grade A to C and will be based at the department's Pretoria Head Office, working within one of the Northern, Central, Eastern or Southern Planning Regions. Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer of the assigned region, the incumbents will join dedicated project teams focused on the optimisation and planning of water resources utilisation and development across the country. This involves evaluating a wide range of options to ensure that water resources are managed sustainably and effectively to meet current and future demands.

The role requires a strong academic and professional foundation, beginning with a Civil Engineering degree, either a B Eng or BSc (Eng) qualification. Candidates must have at least three years of post-qualification experience in the civil engineering field and must hold compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer. A valid, unexpired driver's licence is also required and must be disclosed. Crucially, applicants need pertinent knowledge and experience within the field of water resource management, along with a thorough understanding of the National Water Act (No 36 of 1998), the Water Services Act, the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), and relevant dam safety legislation.

The core duties of this role are multifaceted and centre on the full lifecycle of water resource projects. The incumbents will be responsible for identifying available water resources and development needs through multidisciplinary basic studies, conceptualising possible solutions to meet water demands, and evaluating the associated social, economic and environmental impacts of those solutions. The work extends to developing water management strategies, conducting comparative analyses, and optimising and reporting on feasibility investigations into potential water resource development projects. Additionally, the engineers will prepare critical inputs for decision-making processes regarding the selection, appointment and control of professional service providers, ensuring that projects are delivered to the highest standards. This is an OSD-graded position, and the all-inclusive remuneration package offered will be determined based on the years of relevant experience the successful candidate brings.

This is an affirmative action position, and in accordance with the Department's Employment Equity Plan and applicable legislation, preference will be given to candidates from previously disadvantaged groups. This is a permanent, full-time role within a government department, offering a stable career path and the chance to make a tangible difference in managing one of the nation's most vital resources. The role is ideal for a professional engineer who is passionate about water resource management and is looking to apply their expertise in a meaningful, public-service context.
