This role is central to the department's mandate of providing safe care, custody and developmental support to residents within its facilities. The successful candidate will work within a multi-disciplinary team environment, ensuring that educational programmes align with both curriculum requirements and departmental legislation.
Applicants must possess an appropriate three-year post-school qualification and be registered with SACE as a professional educator. A minimum of three years' experience as an educationalist or educator is required, along with a valid Code B or higher driving licence. Importantly, people with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but who have reasonable access to transport are also encouraged to apply. The role demands a solid understanding of applicable policies and procedures, public service processes, labour relations, financial management and project management. Candidates should also demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, sound budgeting skills, planning and facilitation expertise, and effective interpersonal relations. Written and verbal communication, planning and organising, learning and researching, relating and networking, adapting to change, adhering to principles and values, and analytical skills are all essential.
The core duties involve implementing educational programmes at departmental facilities in accordance with curriculum requirements and legislation. The Education Officer will implement facility policies and procedures aimed at enhancing the safe care, custody and development of residents, which includes participating in multi-disciplinary team meetings, incident reporting, behaviour management and controlling unauthorised articles. Administrative functions form a significant part of the role, and the incumbent is expected to pursue continuous professional development to remain current with new developments in the social work and social welfare fields.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews on a date determined by the department and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the communicated timeframe. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in exclusion from the process. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment evaluating ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is an opportunity for a dedicated education professional to contribute meaningfully to the development and care of vulnerable residents within a structured public service environment.
