This permanent post, offered within the Mpumalanga Department of Education under Programme 4 and the Chief Directorate for Sen School Social Support, is for a school-based therapist based in the Nkangala district, specifically serving the Bronkhorstspruit area. The role is an OSD-graded position, and the successful candidate will join the professional multi-disciplinary team responsible for supporting learners with special educational needs. Operating from a school setting, the therapist will focus on helping learners overcome barriers to learning and participation caused by physical, neurological, sensory or developmental challenges, working alongside teachers, other therapists and support staff to create an integrated, holistic support system for each child.

The ideal candidate must hold an appropriate, recognised qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the specific therapeutic field, namely either Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy. In addition to HPCSA registration, registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) is required, as the role operates within the education environment. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as the post may require travel between schools or sites within the district. The appointment level and grade will be determined according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) guidelines, and relevant experience as a therapist who has completed community service is required to enable this grading. The department will subject all recommended candidates to a vetting and screening process before appointment.

In terms of duties, the therapist will function as an integral member of the professional multi-disciplinary team, providing direct occupational or speech therapy to learners who present with perceptual-motor problems, physical and neurological impairments, sensory integration difficulties and developmental backlogs. The therapist will also design and implement both prevention and intervention support programmes tailored to learners with special needs, working not only directly with learners but also advising parents and educators on strategies to support each child’s development and learning within the school context.

Notably, applications that do not yet include proof of SACE registration will be provisionally accepted, provided that definite proof is submitted prior to appointment. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise evaluating technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment. The Mpumalanga Department of Education is committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action employment, and the filling of this post will align with its approved Employment Equity Plan, with preference given to candidates whose appointment will promote representivity in terms of disability, gender and race. As part of the application process, qualified applicants should note that only a comprehensive, up-to-date CV is required at the initial stage, and certified documents will only be requested from shortlisted candidates. The department also reserves the right to verify all qualifications and to withdraw the post if internal processes require it.
