This position is based in the Blaauwberg Region (Tygerberg) within the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. It is a Level 04 operational post that combines core driving responsibilities with a range of secondary administrative and support functions. As the driver, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light and medium motor vehicles, transporting passengers and delivering equipment, mail and documents across the region. You will also play a key role in supporting the smooth running of the office by performing messenger duties, assisting with registry and stationery tasks, and helping with general administration.
To be considered, you need a Junior Certificate (Grade 10) or equivalent qualification, at least one year of relevant experience, and a valid Code B (or higher) driving licence with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP). The role demands a sound knowledge of vehicle procedures, including how to obtain trip authorities, complete logbooks, procure fuel and arrange basic services such as tyre repairs. You must also understand the prescripts for correct vehicle utilisation, including storage requirements and permitted purposes, and be able to ensure the vehicle is properly maintained. Strong numeracy, literacy and driving skills are essential, as is familiarity with the cities in which the duties will be performed.
Your main duties will include driving vehicles to transport passengers and deliver items, monitoring and recording routine maintenance, reporting defects timeously, and completing all prescribed records and logbooks. Beyond driving, you will render a clerical support and messenger service: collecting and delivering documentation, making photocopies, scanning and emailing, and assisting in the registry or stationary store. You will also help prepare for monitoring visits, load and offload vehicles, support tasks during library visits, and assist with asset verification and control of books, equipment and furniture. Checking lists of items issued or received and handling new consignment lists are also part of the role, along with any ad hoc tasks assigned by your supervisor.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and submit completed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. All shortlisted candidates must also undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, you consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a full-time government position, and applications are only accepted online, so be sure to submit before the closing date as late applications will not be considered.
