This position is a Driver Messenger role based within the Corporate Services Branch of the department, stationed at the Johannesburg Head Office. The post supports the smooth running of departmental operations by providing reliable transport and courier services to staff and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving light and medium motor vehicles to carry passengers and deliver various items, including mail, files, documents, and parcels, across the city and nearby areas. In addition to driving duties, the role involves hands-on administrative support, such as collecting and delivering documentation, copying, scanning and faxing paperwork, and assisting in the registry. This makes the job well suited to someone who is comfortable combining driving responsibilities with general office and records support, and who understands the importance of timely, secure handling of official material.
Applicants must have a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification, together with at least one year of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential, and holding a Professional Driving Permit will be an added advantage. Practical knowledge of the cities and routes where the work will be performed is required, along with sound planning and organisational skills. The role also demands computer literacy, strong language and communication abilities, and a clear understanding of customer expectations. Because the job involves regular interaction with staff, officials and external contacts, a courteous and professional manner is essential.
Key duties include conducting routine maintenance on the allocated vehicle and reporting any defects timeously. The driver messenger must also ensure that vehicle licences, service schedules and safety equipment are always up to date, and that all prescribed records and logbooks are completed accurately regarding both the vehicle and the goods handled. The ability to work independently and manage multiple deliveries in an efficient, safe manner is therefore crucial.
The department is committed to advancing employment equity and to promoting representation in the public service. In line with the departmental Employment Equity Plan, preference will be given to persons with disabilities, as well as Coloured, Indian and White female candidates. Applicants are expected to indicate their race, gender and disability status to facilitate this process. A fully completed official application form, as prescribed by the Minister for the Public Service and Administration, must be accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae; failure to attach the CV will result in disqualification. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications, identity documents and driver’s licences, and will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise to determine technical suitability and an integrity test. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department reserves the right not to appoint, and applicants who do not receive feedback within three months should consider their applications unsuccessful.
