Driver (Light Duty Vehicle) (PHC Support & Outreach) (Permanent position)

This permanent position is for a Driver of a Light Duty Vehicle within the Primary Health Care Support and Outreach unit, based in the Matzikama Sub-district of the West Coast District in the Western Cape. The role is central to enabling community-based health services by ensuring that staff, patients, equipment and supplies move safely and efficiently between facilities and outreach points. Working under the direction of a supervisor, the driver also provides direct support to the oral health team, helping to extend essential care to communities that may otherwise struggle to access services. This is a hands-on operational role that requires reliability, good judgement and a strong sense of responsibility, as the driver is often required to work independently and without direct supervision.

To be considered, applicants need basic literacy and numeracy, along with appropriate experience in transporting personnel and goods within a health environment. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is essential, as is a valid Public Driving Permit. Candidates must be willing to travel, work overtime, and perform standby duties, including on weekends and public holidays. The role also demands physical fitness, since the driver will be required to handle heavy equipment and objects. Beyond the formal qualifications, the department is looking for someone who can accept accountability, work unsupervised, and maintain sober habits at all times. A sound knowledge of routine vehicle maintenance and the ability to carry out defect inspections are also key, as is a commitment to safe driving practices.
