This vacancy is for a Driver of Extra Heavy Motor Vehicles within the Department of Water and Sanitation, specifically attached to the Infrastructure Management Branch’s Southern Operations, under the Water Resources Infrastructure Operations and Maintenance Directorate. The position is based at Breede/Gouritz in Worcester, Western Cape, and forms part of the department’s broader operational maintenance structure. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of extra heavy vehicles in support of water infrastructure maintenance teams, and will be expected to operate across various schemes throughout the Western Cape. As an OSD-graded post at level 05, the role carries supervisory responsibilities and requires a high level of technical and behavioural competence.

Applicants must possess an NQF level 4 qualification, a valid unexpired driver’s licence in class EC, and a valid unexpired Professional Driving Permit (PDP). A minimum of five years’ experience in driving heavy motor vehicles or maintenance vehicles is required. The ability to operate additional equipment such as a truck-mounted crane, TLB, and forklift will serve as a strong advantage. Technical knowledge should include advanced extra heavy vehicle equipment operation, basic vehicle maintenance, and sound literacy, planning and supervision skills. Behaviourally, the incumbent must demonstrate client orientation, customer focus, basic communication skills, accountability, and sound ethical conduct.

The core duties revolve around operating an extra heavy motor vehicle in accordance with road ordinance prescripts. This includes transporting personnel, equipment and materials, loading and offloading goods, and maintaining delivery and pickup registers. The driver will also operate specialised equipment as required and supervise assistants within the team. A key responsibility is conducting routine inspections to identify visible, operational and safety defects, reporting these to the Supervisor, Transport Officer or Mechanic, while also repairing minor mechanical faults and ensuring major defects are escalated for professional repair. The role requires that servicing is carried out timeously and that all work is performed in line with applicable legislative and safety requirements. Accurate record-keeping is essential, including daily trip registers, fuel consumption logs and logbooks for both vehicles and machinery.

The incumbent must also ensure that equipment and parking spaces are kept clean, that vehicles are safely stored while on route and at base, and that cargo remains secure throughout journeys. When not operating the truck, the driver is expected to assist maintenance teams with their tasks, including the removal and installation of equipment using the truck-mounted crane, overhead crane, and forklift. This is a hands-on operational role requiring flexibility, as the incumbent must be willing to work away from home and travel to all schemes across the Western Cape.
